In 1985, the American Artist Judith Black realised that she had never taken the classic American Road Trip to criss-cross the country east coast to west coast with her four children. On receiving in 1986 a Guggenheim grant, she decided to do just that. The itinerary stopped at homes of family and friends from New York to Chicago, from Seattle to San Francisco, from California back to Massachusetts, with a few camp sites at national parks.
Sweet memories of her childhood vacations were embedded in one special location. The stop in Michigan to visit her aunt was a return to the place where at age seven she had purchased her first brownie camera while staying with her grandmother.
Shorter vacations to see her father, siblings and extended family members recorded birthday celebrations, reunions and new babies. Fond memories of happy times.
