Chris Killip was one of the defining photographers of the last century. From the mid-1970s onward, he rooted himself in the communities of North East England at a time when industry still bound whole towns together, and stayed as those worlds began to change. Through his work, Killip gave voice to those who, in his words, “had history done to them”. His photographs do not look back in mourning, but stand firm in the dignity of ordinary lives.
For Killip, the book was not a container, but the final form of the work. Every page, every surface, every tone was considered. These new large format limited-edition lithographs are made in that same spirit, with the same process, the same weight of intent. Cookie in the Snow is offered here for the first time as a large-format lithograph print, in a strictly numbered edition of 100, on heavy weight stock, which will not be reprinted.
“Cookie was one of the people I was very friendly with. It was a Sunday morning and his horse, Creamy, had just won a trotting race against guys from town. He’d won a £1,000. The race takes place very early so the police aren’t around. Then we go to the pub — at half past 7 in the morning — and the drinks are on Cookie because he has all of this money. Walking back to camp, I knew Cookie had to come back that way, I put the camera on the tripod and I’m swaying quite a bit because I’m drunk. But I knew exactly when I was going to take the picture of him. He didn’t lift his head. I took that one picture, just one frame.” - Chris Killip
