Athens Masterclass 17–19 June
Truly great books do not simply come into being. Bookmaking is a collaborative alchemy, where we gather and shape photographs into something greater than the sum of their parts.
From 17–19 June in Athens, Greece, STANLEY/BARKER will host a three-day Photo book Masterclass. Taking place during Athens Photo Festival, it offers a rare opportunity to work closely on your own project while surrounded by exhibitions, talks, and the wider conversation of photography.
Led by Rachel and Gregory Barker, founders of STANLEY/BARKER, the Masterclass is built as a focused, hands-on environment where you will will learn how to conceptualise your edit, refine your sequencing, and develop a clearer understanding of how to collaborate within the production of a book.
Through lectures, group discussions, and one-to-one guidance, you will work toward a more complete understanding of the photo book as an artwork. Drawing on over a decade of publishing and more than 100 titles, (including Tod Papageorge’s wonderful On the Acropolis, from which several images are included here) Rachel and Gregory offer a direct, practical perspective on both making and releasing books into the world.
The group is limited to ten participants, allowing each project the attention it requires, with space for sustained discussion and direct feedback.
If you have a series of photographs nearing completion, or perhaps a project that has been tucked away in your archive unseen, then apply to join us in Athens this Summer.

Words from previous attendees
“The STANLEY/BARKER workshop was such an inspiring experience. Over three days, I started to see my project not just as a series of images, but as a living story, something that could truly come to life through the form of a book. - Paris Photo/Aperture book Award Nominee Hohamed Hassan
"The workshop was truly illuminating. It was important for me to understand how to translate a photographic project onto paper, how to do it through an idea that is both essential and at the same time incisive. - Paris Photo/Aperture book Award Nominee Ciro Battiloro
